Retroid

After two weeks of shipping from China, and me following every tracking update live, the Retroid Pocket Nova finally arrived.

Jasper sent me an awesome two-hour setup video and I went through it step by step, but from my Mac instead of tapping through menus on the device. Ansible and a few bash scripts install the APKs and push the config files, and for everything that can’t be automated I used adb and scrcpy to control the Retroid remotely. If you want to provision your own, text me and I’ll share the code.

microSD cards are way too expensive right now, luckily my first generation Switch still had a 256 GB card in it. That’s 100 euros saved.

Tilian annexed the Retroid for Super Mario World, right after he took over Ace Combat 8 on the PlayStation, the game I had planned to play myself. The upside is that as long as he has the Retroid, the PlayStation is free again, so in a way I lured him away with it.

I play on the PS Portal, so the boys don’t see games like CONTROL Resonant, but that only works when nobody else is using the PlayStation. Now I’m about 70% through the story and exploration. I was sceptical about the switch to open levels. The first CONTROL felt open too, but mostly inside large closed spaces, this one lets you roam freely. Without spoilers, the second half is a different experience from the first, and I can only recommend it.
